Clinical Presentation
Common signs and symptoms of CAP include:
- Fever
- Tachypnea and dyspnea
- Tachycardia
- Pleuritic chest pain
- Sputum production (generally purulent with bacterial pneumonia, clear/watery with viral and some other atypical pathogens); rust colored sputum may be present with pneumococcal pneumonia
- Crackles
- Increased tactile fremitus (palpable vibration with vocalization) over areas of consolidation
- Egophony (increased resonance of voice sounds with auscultation) over areas of consolidation
- Dullness to percussion
- Gastrointestinal symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Myalgia
- Malaise
